The back and forth motion of the economy causes uncertainties in the workforce across all industries. Leaders in every field need to be armed with management skills, conflict resolution abilities, and impeccable confidence to emerge victorious in their strife of running a well-oiled organisation. With over a decade’s worth of experience in talent acquisition and strategic workforce planning, Jane Hansen—the Head of Talent and Succession at Landlease—has demonstrated her skills in organizational design by coaching leaders of top companies. Jane takes a moment to exclusively talk with HR Tech Outlook to shed some light on the current technological trends in leadership development.
In your opinion, how has the Leadership Development landscape evolved over the years? What are the myriad advantages of technological evolution for businesses today?
The expectation on leaders is increasing and our priority is equipping them to succeed in an increasingly complex and fast-moving environment.
At Lendlease, to reach our learner population we have become increasingly reliant on technology. That technology is either through web-learning, webinars or social learning. For our population, we are a project-based business with people out in multiple locations and very geographically dispersed, this progression of learning is a terrific channel for us. It ensures all our employees have access to learning when and where they need it.
What according to you are some of the challenges plaguing Leadership Development today and how can they be effectively mitigated?
Mindset is one of the biggest challenges. Enabling our leaders to understand that leadership is their day job is the first big step. Changing mindsets of our leaders from one of technical expertise to one of people managers is a fundamental consideration for our business. Once a leader understands their role as a leader is to enable, guide, challenge and ensure delivery, as opposed to delivering themselves, then they are well on the way to becoming a more effective leader.
Which are a few technological trends influencing Leadership Development today? What are some of the best practice’s businesses should adopt today to steer ahead of competitors?
Agile mindsets and agile ways of working, as well as leading through disruption and leading in a technological era will quickly become a core capability of future leaders. Online learning through external cohorts promotes greater innovation and expands thinking. The final piece to this puzzle is ensuring that everyone has a chance to access these opportunities and that they’re encouraged to apply them in greatest affect.
Do you have any suggestions for our reader segment which comprises of industry veterans and young entrepreneurs from the Leadership Development space?
These principles apply to every careers stage, not just to leaders, so we are investing in our graduates in the same way. Ultimately all employees need to be empowered to drive their own learning and their own career. The information and knowhow are readily available, it is about making it accessible and enabling them to outperform in their current role and drive career objectives.
